CASE STUDY – PEEBLES LAWN TENNIS CLUB.

Disciplines : Groundworks, siteworks, fencing, court surfaces, equipment and lighting

The Brief

Peebles Tennis Club has operated for many years from a site in the town at Victoria Park. The club had three well-loved blaes (shale) courts and two macadam courts with lights. A few years ago as the blaes became more difficult and labour intensive to maintain the club embarked on a fund raising campaign to resurface the courts and add lights. The club carried out extensive research into surface options and their preferred choice was a high-quality artificial clay from Lano installed by Doe Sport (North).

Build up and delivery

Peebles worked very hard to raise funds for the full works which comprised the formation of three new courts with LED floodlights. The artificial clay surface has to be laid onto a porous asphalt base and the club worked hard to secure funds to deliver the project in one contract. However, when the first fund raise was completed it became apparent that they could only deliver the base surface and lighting and that the artificial clay surface would have to be delivered as a second phase. Doe worked closely with the club to agree costs, ensure the club could continue to play on the asphalt surface with temporary lines and then worked closely on budgeting and timing to support the club through the additional fund raising. Phase 1 was completed in 2018 with funding support from Sportscotland and the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. The club then played for one season on the tarmac courts before Doe returned and laid the Lano Grand Clay surface. This was completed in Summer of 2019 and has proven very popular with Peebles proudly allowing other clubs to visit and play test the surface.

The Results

Peebles Tennis Club is now the first club in the Borders to have artificial clay courts.  Combined with modern LED floodlights and two newly painted floodlit macadam courts this means the club have the best facilities in the area and can offer an extensive all year-round programme of coaching, social and competitive tennis to the community in Peebles and the wider Scottish Borders region.

The Club are absolutely delighted with our 3 new floodlit artificial clay courts.  We were really pleased with the work carried out by Doe over the 2 phases. They provided a very professional service and every one of their staff were patient, helpful and accommodating. We have no hesitation in recommending them
