Huntingdon celebrates the official opening of its new
indoor / outdoor Tennis Centre on 17 September. The move to King George V
Playing Fields brings the Huntingdon Club, based at the Centre, within a
stone's throw of "Tennis Court Avenue" - site of the first tennis facility
in the town over 100 years ago.
The Club, founded in 1935, marks its 70th
birthday this year and has invited local dignitaries and guests to join them
for the official opening of their 3 indoor / 4 outdoor court centre
constructed by DOE.
It is not surprising that this particular Club has
succeeded with its relocation and monumental fund raising where others have
been unsuccessful. Its pioneering spirit was established as long ago as
1968 when it became one of the first 'community' clubs on its original site
at Hinchingbrooke School.
With an outstanding coaching programme, Huntingdon has
gained LTA performance accreditation for mini and junior tennis and produced
two National players. The success of their junior development plan is
clearly evident from the Club's membership of 182 juniors and 104 adults.
It has taken more than 10 years, over £750,000 and
collaboration between the LTA, Sport England, the Freemen of Huntingdon, the
District Council, the Town Council and, of course, the Club, its committee
and members to go from the long search for a suitable site to realising this
superb new facility.
Nancy Riach, Chair of the Club , said - "It's a dream
come true and we can now offer top-class facilities every day of the year".
Photos of the opening will
follow later in September.
